Exploring Naperville

Century Walk: Century walk is a walkthrough of 40+ pieces of public art of Naperville, including its history and its citizens. This all began in 1996, as a public art of murals, mosaics, and sculptures. The first 30 pieces display the history of Naperville in the 20th century through people, places, and events. The other pieces include not just historical themes, but art in general. “The Great Concerto” is a piece of artwork that includes the faces of 56 residents of the city depicted in the art. Other pieces that include the citizens include decorated WII veterans of the city as well.

Dupage Children’s Museum: This three-story discovery center has over 150 exhibits for children to interact and play. There are exhibits for children from birth to 24 months. They can splash, build, construct, create all in the same place, all the while learning. The good show gallery and the interaction with the art gallery are great ways to introduce your children to art, while studio drop-in activities allow children to create unique works of art that can be taken home. This museum was given an award by Red Tricycle in 2013 for “totally awesome”.

Knoch Knolls Nature Center: This center is about exploring the du page river and its ecosystem. The east branch and the west branch of the river come together at the Knoch knolls park making a unique confluence of water and land. The nature center provides a unique perspective of the underwater world found in this community. The interpretive exhibits tell the tales of the river’s formation, its wildlife, and the river’s impact on human lives to the present day. There’s also a 900-gallon tank that will give you a glimpse into the inside of the river. There is also a big dock that faces the pond and the west branch of the du page. There’s also a cistern used to collect rainwater, teaching the importance of conservation.

Naper Settlement: An outdoor history museum, where you can tour the historic buildings, and interact with people dressed in clothing from way past. This village is about telling the story of how life changed for its residents throughout the 19th century. Naperville has a research library, 40,000 historical objects, and archival materials, and 10,000 photographs related to local history. Weddings, lectures, educational workshops, and meetings are held out here year-round.

Naperville Fine Art Center and Gallery: Founded in 1961, it is an institution that provides education in art, and encourages all forms of art. This facility is open to the public and conducts workshops, classes, and exhibitions.

Naperville Trolley Tours: Offered during June, July, and August, this train ride takes you on a ride of old and new Naperville, showing the progress of the city from its inception.

The Millennium Carillon: The millennium carillon housed inside the 160-foot tall structure called Moser tower. It is 10 feet taller than the statue of liberty, but if you get up to the top you can get some great views. Up from the top, you can view the Chicago Skyline, the River Walk, and Centennial beach.
